Eric Hoffman

Eric M. Hoffman, JD

Prosecuting Attorney | 46th Judicial Circuit of Indiana

Eric M. Hoffman, JD, began his accomplished journey in legal services as an undergraduate at Ball State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, criminology, and legal assistance. When he entered the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law, he had the intention of becoming involved in labor law and labor arbitration, but his aspirations changed after he completed a certified legal internship with a prosecutor’s office. Before graduating with a JD in 2003, he tried a firearms case to a jury and convicted a perpetrator who was a habitual offender, which sparked an active interest in legal prosecution and holding those who commit crimes accountable for their actions.

Driven by persistent hard work and an unshakable dedication, Mr. Hoffman served as the deputy prosecuting attorney with the 46th Judicial Circuit of Indiana from 2003 to 2011 before advancing to deputy prosecutor for six years—wielding expertise in homicide and trauma cases, with a particular passion for unsolved murder and child-based investigations. In 2008, he achieved a remarkable feat by reopening a cold case murder that occurred in 1993—collaborating with law enforcement and guided by his meticulous investigation, he uncovered that the victim’s soon-to-be ex-husband had hired a hitman to carry out the heinous crime. His hard work paid off when he successfully prosecuted and convicted both the husband and the triggerman; beyond being a noteworthy resolution to this day, he found it most rewarding that his efforts brought justice to the victim and her family.

Since 2019, Mr. Hoffman has been active as the prosecuting attorney for the judicial circuit, wherein he supervises an office of roughly 40 employees, attorneys, and non-attorneys; deals with administrative, employment, and supervision issues; handles the high-profile and more serious cases; and carries as an active liaison for numerous community groups, including police departments, law enforcement agencies, school systems, and hospitals. As an extension of his work, he has been an integral affiliate of such organizations as Fight Crime: Invest in Kids, Delaware County Community Corrections, Ball Memorial Hospital Hospice Program, Indiana State Child Fatality Review Team, Delaware County Child Protection Team, and Regional Child Fatality Review Team. In addition, he’s a member of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children and the Association of Government Attorneys in Capital Litigation.

A frequent speaker and presenter, Mr. Hoffman is considering writing about his unsolved murder cases in the future. He strives to continue relentlessly pursuing justice for victims who have been wronged and ensuring their rights are upheld. He’s passionate about standing up for those who have been harmed and strives to utilize his skills and expertise to make a strong impact on the lives of the people of Delaware County. Above everything else, though, he’s most proud of being the father of his three daughters.

Eric Hoffman has been included in Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

After graduating from Mishawaka Marian High School, Mr. Hoffman attended Ball State University and earned a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice, criminology, and legal assistance. Although he intended to become an attorney, he was unsure of what his specialty would be. In 2000, he began his legal studies and became interested in labor law and labor arbitration. However, his aspirations changed after completing an internship with a prosecutor’s office. Through his internship, he tried a firearms case before a jury before graduating from law school. At the end of the trial, jury found the defendant guilty. Upon graduating from Indiana University’s Robert H. McKinney School of Law in 2003, he became the deputy prosecuting attorney for the 46th Judicial Circuit of Indiana. In this capacity, Mr. Hoffman reviewed police action shooting cases and prosecuted certain violent crimes against the state, including murders and lesser degrees of homicide.

In the ensuing years, Mr. Hoffman gained valuable expertise in homicide cases, police action shooting cases, shaken baby and abusive head trauma cases, complex litigation, and more as the chief deputy prosecutor for the 46th Judicial Circuit. Drawing on years of professional experience, he excels with the Circuit as a prosecuting attorney, a role to which he was elected in 2019. In this capacity, Mr. Hoffman supervises an office of about 40 employees, attorneys, and other professionals, handles administrative, employment, and supervision issues, and liaises with several community groups, police departments, law enforcement agencies, school systems, and hospitals. Due to his vast breadth of knowledge, he has contributed to various public speaking engagements and some of his legal work resulted in published opinions, including McConniel v. State, Saintignon v. State, Walden v. State, State v. Casada, Newton v. State, Turner v. State, White v. State, and State v. Stidham.

Throughout his career, Mr. Hoffman has become licensed to practice law through the United States District Court for the Southern and Northern Districts of Indiana, the Indiana State Bar Association, the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and The Supreme Court of the United States. Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, he aligns himself with the National of District Attorneys Association, Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council, Delaware County Community Corrections, and the Association of Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Inc. In conjunction with his work, Mr. Hoffman contributes to his community with the Regional Child Fatality Review Team. Previously, he devoted himself to the Ball Memorial Hospital Hospice Program and the Delaware County Court Appointed Special Advocates.

In light of his professional achievements, Mr. Hoffman received the Delaware County Prevent Child Abuse Award in 2012 and became the finalist for the Person of the Year Award through The Star Press in 2013. While his career has been filled with highlights, he takes the most pride in establishing a High Tech Crimes Unit, preparing and managing an annual budget of nearly 2 million dollars, implementing an E-Discovery cloud-based system for providing defense counsel with discovery material and reopening a cold case murder that occurred in 1993. Due to his collaboration with 3/20/2024 law enforcement, the case was solved. Though hard work and dedication have brought him far in his career, he credits his success to his commitment to what he does and the support of his family. Looking forward, Mr. Hoffman intends to pursue justice for victims who have been wronged and protecting those who cannot protect themselves.
